PUBERTY STINKS

How surprised where you smelling your cute little child after their first gym day?  Going in for that smooch from your little primary schooler after their active day will make the hairs in your nose stand.

According to NHS.uk, children begin puberty as early as 8 years old and as late as 14 years old.  Our children start gym days as early as 5 years old.  No one wants to put products that are unhealthy on our kids.

I remember that day, like it was yesterday.  It took me by surprise, and I asked that my child shower and put-on deodorant immediately.  The problem was, I had the brands that were used by my parents and their parents and none of us ever looked at the label to see what was in those brands. I stopped short, because I did not want her to use traditional deodorants with all the toxins and chemicals I could not pronounce on my own child.

Adrenarche is the medical term for pubescent odor. Body changes that begin when the adrenal glands become more active. The increase in hormonal activity causes excessive sweating. For some kids, bathing will not be enough to prevent body odor throughout the day, especially when they are active. Deodorants work by covering up the smell of sweat, while antiperspirants stop or reduce the amount of sweat produced, referenced in Today’s Parent. Covering the odor will not eliminate it, but make it worse. Sweating is a natural response from our bodies, blocking the sweat will cause complications for our lymphatic systems as it tries to eliminate toxins.

HOW SWEAT WORKS

Our bodies contain two kinds of sweat glands.

The eccrine glands are spread all over the body and help to cool us down when we’re too hot because of the weather, a fever, exertion or spicy food. Sweat, which is mostly a combination of water and salt, cools the body as it evaporates.

The apocrine glands are located under the arms and in the groin, and they produce oils as well as sweat after puberty begins. They also cause sweating when we are hot, as well as when we are stressed.
